Fascinating book about food system

Incredibly important book. Mark Hyman comes from a background as a doctor specialising in food, and what we should be eating. He covers a wide variety of ways in which the food system is seriously failing and how it can be better. The great challenge of our time will be feeding upwards of 10 billion people on a climate impacted planet. We already have that capacity (already producing enough calories for well above the current population), but there are serious problems with how we are producing food as well as the distribution of that food. There are many fascinating insights in the book e.g. obesity becoming a security issue as the defence force have fewer healthy recruits, or bad food contributing to poorer education outcomes or even criminality. Or land degradation meaning we only have some 60 harvests left before soil depletion seriously reduces productivity. Whereas food companies might want to push attention to exercise and personal responsibility, the main problem for obesity is diet. People should be conscious of what they are eating and try to eat better, but Hyman also shows how the food system is structurally unsound in many ways (and food corporations lobby to keep it that way). Thus, we need serious policy responses, such as sugar taxes, promoting healthy and sustainable agriculture, limiting advertising to children etc. There are many ways in which we can produce healthier, more sustainable and more productive food through regenerative agriculture. The case studies of food subsidies and the food / GMO lobby are largely American, but would have relevance elsewhere. The book promises to show how food can "save our health, economy, communities, and our planet" and it does so very well. I have already started to eat some more vegetables. Another good takeaway is "don't drink your sugars." For further reading about agricultural problems and an example of a sustainable farm in an Australian context, see The Wolleen Way.
